Survitec Service & Distribution (SSD), one of Europe's leading providers of critical safety equipment, rope, lifting gear and inspection services, has embraced the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association's (LEEA) TEAM Card initiative. Over 40 Team Cards have been issued so far to SSD's team of lifting engineers, with many in the process of gaining additional accreditations.
Recognised throughout industry as a quality standard, the TEAM (Test, Examine And Maintain) Card provides clear evidence that an engineer is qualified to work on a particular type of lifting equipment. The photo-ID cards are only given to people that have passed the LEEA Diploma examination.
Explained Mark Revans, SSD's UK Lifting Technical Manager: "For obvious reasons, the testing, examination and maintenance of lifting equipment should only ever be carried out by an engineer with specialist skills. That's why we think the TEAM Card is a great idea that will help to improve safety on site."
To obtain a TEAM Card, candidates have to take both practical and theoretical training courses in the test, examination and maintenance of overhead lifting equipment. After completing a general foundation module, they study one of four distinct modules by either distance learning or in a classroom. The modules address the main overhead lifting product families of general lifting gear, manual lifting machines, powered lifting machines and runways and light crane structures.
After completing the training, the engineer sits an examination in the chosen module. The TEAM Card lists the holder's precise qualifications to ensure an engineer can only work on equipment for which they have demonstrated the appropriate skills and expertise. Once acquired the Card is valid for five years. It can only be issued to employees of LEEA member companies.
Added Mark: "The Card provides clear evidence that the holder is qualified to do the job and I am very pleased to report that every one of our lifting engineers has gained the requisite qualifications in one or more lifting categories. All businesses, large or small, should insist on seeing an engineer's TEAM Card before letting them work on their lifting equipment."
Commented Andrew Wright, training manager at LEEA: "We are delighted to support SSD with their policy of setting the LEEA TEAM Card as the standard required for its lifting engineers. Right across the world, lifting equipment is subject to rigorous health and safety regulations. Often this includes a clear requirement for periodic examination by a ‘competent person’. The LEEA’s TEAM Card offers impartial verification of the skills of the holder, helping to ensure that employers stay on the right side of the law.”
With its expanding team of highly skilled engineers, SSD has become a market leader in lifting equipment and inspection services.
